Shelly Fletcher is a Canadian Aboriginal stone carver, painter, and visual artist, descendant from the Missanabie Cree First Nation. Her people had long ago settled and lived in a vast expanse between Hudson’s Bay and The Great Lakes.
Born in London Ontario, she studied fine arts at the Nova Scotia College of Arts and Design, Her work is influenced by her Cree Ancestry, the legends and stories of her people, and the life-ways of Aboriginal Peoples across Turtle Island. She now lives and works out of her studio in Sault Ste Marie Ontario, having returned to the proximity of her roots and ancestry
Having found her gift in creating wonderful pieces of art at a young age, she has truly inherited skills that convey a deep mystic quality through fine detail and pleasant style. Her art could be described as “contemporary native” and ranges from quite traditional to semi-abstract.
She has spent her life time creating masterful pieces primarily during her extended stay in the Maritimes region and some of the works can still be seen in many public places and private homes around the world. She now works out of her studio in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, close to her ancestral homeland.
Shelly has enhanced her skills in fine arts programs at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, but since having learned many skills by literally watching her grandfather chiseling on wood, she is self taught. This has allowed her to develop and enhance her own individual style.
Having received commissions for her carvings from places such
as the Ministry of Sport and Culture in New Brunswick, she had many
exhibitions in the Maritimes and her art was often sold very quickly,
leading to her work being in high demand.
